The Pros and Cons of Self-Driving Cars

When it comes to self-driving cars, there are some good points and some bad points about it. Though it highlights a huge step forward in the advancement of technology, self-driving cars have a long way to go before they can be seen as a viable alternative.

The Pros of Self-Driving Cars

One of the biggest pros of self-driving cars is that they can help make traffic run more efficiently. Self-driving cars can communicate in ways no one previously thought possible. Since they can communicate with each other, self-driving cars will always move at speeds that don’t impede traffic but don’t cause a dangerous situation easier.

Not only that, but these cars are less likely to cause accidents. This is largely due to the fact that most car accidents are caused by driver error, and/or drinking too much alcohol.

Self-driving cars also benefit people who either choose not to drive or have a medical or physical reason why they can’t. This provides these people with a way to get around safely without having to rely on public transportation to do it.

On top of all these other pros, self-driving cars also greatly benefit the environment. These cars are designed to run on electricity as opposed to gasoline. Equipped with internal combustion engines, they accelerate consistently, maintaining one speed. This cuts down on the need for constant breaking, so fewer emissions are released into the air.

The Cons Of Self-Driving Cars

For all the pros of self-driving cars, there are some cons too. One of them is that they pose certain security issues. Since these cars are computerized it’s possible a hacker could gain access to the car and take over control of it. This can potentially lead to car accidents that wouldn’t happen otherwise.

Another con is that they will cost much more than traditional cars. It has been predicted that the average price for a self-driving car will cost $250,000. Until the price drastically lowers, many people won’t be able to afford to purchase one.

Last but not least, self-driving cars will put many people out of work. This includes bus drivers, truckers, and taxi drivers, leaving these people struggling to find something else to do for a living.
